“Unclothed” Art Auction TODAY! Get Ready, Get Set, BID!

5/14/2021

Picture
MOTAL’s second Slow Art Auction opens today and continues for five days, ending at midnight, May 13. This time, all three figures are without clothes. In Western art, the nude is an enduring subject that has prevailed for centuries. In The Nude: a Study in Ideal Form, famed Lord Kenneth Clark (1956) reminds that this genre of art is not a source of shame.

How does it work? Scroll down for details and bidding directions. Enjoy! This is the third MOTAL “Opportunity Day.” Help The Museum of Teaching and Learning to update its website and grow its presence on YouTube. We educate people about education!
#1 - “Alyssa” is the bronze sculpture of a dancer shown above. She is 17" inches tall, comes with a round walnut base, and weighs 13.2 lbs. Sculptor Neil Weinstein was a professor at Rutgers and has sculpted in wood and clay for many years. His focus on the human figure was first prompted by the acclaimed photography of Ruth Bernhard. His sculptures celebrate the human body's infinite variety of curves, shadows, and dramatic tensions rather than attempting to provide social or political commentary.

The model for this sculpture was an advanced student at the top-rated University of Arizona Dance Program. After half a dozen posing sessions, the clay original was turned into bronze at a specialist art foundry. Only a single casting was made, so the piece is one of a kind.

There is no need to decide which viewing angle you find most pleasing because a rotating walnut base is included with the winning bid. See more at https://www.neilweinsteinsculpture.com/.
Fair Market Value: $2,300
Opening Bid: $760

#2 - “Woman” is an etching (No. 2/3) printed on quality rag paper. The dimensions are 11 x 14, under glass in a black lacquer frame. “Woman” is one etching from a series of seven that portrays different aspects of identity and feminism. This image reminds us that some women prevail after cancer strikes. It was created in 1967, with a technique that involved the transfer of a drawing to a zinc plate 7” x 9” where it was etched, rolled with ink, and printed under pressure of a printing press.

Marjorie Kerr’s work has been chosen for many exhibitions, and commissioned for banners and wall graphics. Readers may want to google “Marjorie Kerr, Fullerton” for articles about her career and exhibitions. She has been selected for exhibitions throughout Southern California and in Japan, winning “Best of Professional Graphics & Design Division” at the Orange County Fair.

#3 - “Flapper” is a German porcelain half-doll. She is 4 inches tall and 2 inches wide. This 1920s figure is made of glazed porcelain, so is truly a china doll. Head and torso are made of one piece. Her stylized, head-hugging hair and spit curls identify her as a flapper.

Half-dolls are the top part of stylish pin cushions that represent the doll’s dress, but most antique fabric pin cushions have aged and are lost. The careful painting and excellent condition indicate a valuable piece. You can google “half-doll” to see the wide variety of styles.
