National Book Lovers Day!Book Lovers, Today is Your Day!

12/17/2021

Picture
Somehow, August 9 became National Book Lovers Day. People started doing Google searches for Book Lovers Day in 2007, but the origins of the effort are not known at this time. Of course, the origins of the holiday are superfluous. The fact that we have a day is what matters; the day has been going strong since at least 2012.

With the advent of online and electronic access to literature, there was a great deal of concern that the “book is dead.” No one should have worried. Print books outsell e-books. Social media has improved access to information about books, including summaries, critiques, booksellers, book resellers, book group discussion prompts, and more. Use any search engine and enter “websites for book lovers” and you will find lists, websites, book groups, and more regarding books.
This list from Bustle, a social media publisher, may be save you a few steps to everything bookish:
  1. Electric Literature
  2. Goodreads
  3. Literary Hub
  4. Book Riot
  5. Catapult
  6. Slaughterhouse 90210
  7. The Rumpus
  8. Vol. 1 Brooklyn
  9. Cover Spy

Some ideas for celebrating Book Lovers Day include:
  • Buy a book.
  • Give a book to a friend.
  • Visit a bookstore.
  • Visit a library.
  • Post a review on social media.
  • Watch a movie based on a book (News of the World is a terrific novel AND a very good movie.)
  • Donate books to a charity, library or school.
  • Listen to an audio book.
  • Read to a child, traveling companion, a sick friend, or a pet.
  • Write a letter to your favorite author.
  • Watch a YouTube video interview of an author or about a classic novel.

Take advantage today, August 9, to let the world know that YOU are a book lover. Share what it is about a book that makes you happy, satisfies your soul, or transports you beyond the humdrum. Above all, enjoy this Book Lovers Day!
