Since early 2020, when the pandemic forced The Museum of Teaching and Learning to keep its traveling exhibitions in storage, MOTAL has published education-related articles, two each week—typically on Tuesday and Friday mornings. These articles aim to provide information that is both interesting and inspiring. Authors so far have included museum board members, interns, staff, and a delightful array of guest authors. The distribution platform is Network for Good, and the list of email recipients is currently just under 1,000. MOTAL’s desire is to grow a much larger audience.

The museum is proud to receive regular compliments from a wide assortment of readers across the U.S. They include educators from all levels, but subscribers also represent many other walks of life. People interested in receiving the articles can become subscribers at no cost by providing a good email address at Subscribe for MOTAL Articles.

Articles so far
Past articles are archived on the museum website, www.motal.org. The website also provides easy-to-find links to the MOTAL YouTube channel that includes podcast interviews and stories. Articles are also featured on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Although all submissions are expected to relate to the museum’s mission of educating people about education, topics have been varied—anything from a story about a 1940s schoolyard marbles champ to a current analysis of the brain’s hippocampus. Almost all works have been nonfiction, but writing styles have included a variety of voices and formats.

Be an author!
MOTAL is actively seeking new authors and new topics! Articles submitted for publication should conform to the guidelines provided below.
  • Remember, the MOTAL mission is: "We educate people about education."
  • Information needs to be fact-based and of interest to a general audience, not just teachers.
  • Education jargon should be avoided unless context clues and explanations are provided.
  • References and/or links to respected, trustworthy sources must be included.
  • MOTAL retains the right to read and edit all submissions.
  • The editorial staff appreciates drafts to be proofread for grammar, clarity, and typographical errors prior to submission.
Each submission should:
  • Include a subject line that will “hook” readers into opening the e-blast.
  • Provide an inner heading, much like a newspaper headline.
  • Be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font in an MS WORD document (doc or docx format).
  • Aim for a length between 1,000 to 1,500 words.
  • Provide two or more photos or illustrations to complement the topic. (MOTAL may be able to help.) If images submitted are not in the public domain, then the author must have ownership rights granted to MOTAL for publication.
  • Include a headshot of any new author along with a brief (four sentences or so) bio.
Articles should be submitted to [email protected] with a copy to [email protected]. MOTAL reserves the right to decide which articles to publish each week . Authors are not compensated for their work.
The Museum of Teaching and Learning looks forward to sharing valuable information about education. As a long-time member of the American Alliance of Museums, the museum ascribes to the AAM Code of Ethics (see https://www.aam-us.org/ ). Incorporated as a 501(c)(3), MOTAL is a charitable nonprofit organization, and donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
