Introducing Cardboard Art! Something so simple as creating together curbs the appetite

12/20/2019

Picture
The cardboard art above and below was shared by Folk Artist Sandy Garcia.
See her bio and contact information at the end of this article.  I have personally known Sandy for 55 years and she has never ceased to amaze me with all the art she creates and teaches.  With simple supplies from home, and a few art supplies purchased online or in a store, a group of three can cautiously, yet therapeutically make art.
CARDBOARD ART
You will need:
Cardboard
scissors
hot glue gun and extra glue sticks
a pencil for tracing

Start from the bottom layer up. Tearing is fine, ragged edges give it more character.  You can use scissors too, and outline with a pencil the shapes to cut/tear beforehand. Then be creative with adding eyes, eyebrows, lips, hair, expressions, hat, clothes, jewelry, just let your creative juices flow.  See the picture above as an example. You can decide to do a cat, dog, truck...the options are endless.

PERSONALITIES ON A STICK
Picture
You will need:
Egg cartons
scissors
masking tape and/or painters tape
a variety of acrylic paint colors
paper plate to put paint on
paint brushes
bowl with water
wood block with stick
If you want to hang your art you will need a paper clip or wire
plaster wrap - it is non-toxic easy to apply, fast setting and drying

Start out with a Styrofoam ball as your base.  Cut out egg cartons to tape on to make ears, lips, nose and other creative folk art features. Add paper clip or wire if hanging.  When done cut out strips of plaster wrap and gently immerse in water. Then take wet strips and rub on entire art work with your fingers. Make sure plaster is completely dry before you paint.
Meet Folk Artist Sandy Garcia, Claremont, California
Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in East Los Angeles, exposed to Latino-Chicano art, inspired her to pursue colorful and simple works of art.

Folk Artist Sandy Garcia’s goal is to eliminate barriers that divide people from each other by focusing on the passion, emotion, and humanity we all share. In order to do this, she prefers the free, bold expressions of strong brush

strokes and the vibrant colors associated with traditional folk art; these are elements that appeal more directly to the senses. She considers her art to be spiritual because she wants to reflect a notion of freedom of the soul. Her form of communication is to write with a paintbrush so that others can read it.

“It’s those imperfections that make Folk Art magical”
